When Ubisoft burned Assassin’s Creed: Unity discs earlier this year they were preparing to release a broken game. It didn’t take long for the player backlash to start following poor performance, countless bugs, and technical glitches on release. You only have to type “Assassin’s Creed: Unity bugs” into YouTube to view ample footage of how poor of a state the game was in. It was so bad in fact, Ubisoft canceled it Second Pass
But they can’t do that before fixing the game that thousands of gamers purchased in good faith. And that fix comes in the form of a massive patch. PS4 and Xbox One owners will today be able to download a 6.7GB Unity patch that’s meant to fix many of the issues. PC gamers will need to wait a few more days to get it. However, the patch is broken on Xbox One. There’s a problem that sees the entire 40GB game try and re-download instead of just the patch.
As for what the patch does, it’s a bit of everything to try and get Unity to the state it should have originally shipped in. The reason for the large size is because Ubisoft has had to replace large sections of Paris to resolve performance issues. What that means is the game won’t actually increase in size on your hard drive by 6.7GB because a lot of assets already present are being replaced.
Once applied, players can expect many of the navigation, world collision, HUD, framerate, save games, NPC behavior, and lock picking issues to be fixed. There should be a noticeable improvement in overall game performance, and a much improved online multiplayer experience. The full patch notes have all the details.
While a 6.7GB patch is going to be a lengthy download for some, and possibly a costly one for those on data capped connections, it looks to be essential if you want to play the game as originally intended.
