Windows 10 arrives July 29

A lot of you have joined the Windows Insider program to get an early look at Windows 10. Many of you are waiting for the software to be finalized before installing it. So when is Microsoft going to give you a crack at the new OS?
According to a new official blog post, on July 29th you’ll be able to download Windows 10 (but not on your phone, that’ll come later). If you’re already using Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1, it won’t cost you a cent — as long as you grab your upgrade during the first-year window. You’ll even score a free copy ofCandy Crush in the process.

How do you ensure that you won’t miss out, procrastinators? Just reserve yourself a download ahead of time. Microsoft is releasing a “Get Windows 10″ app that will hang out in the background and start downloading the software as soon as it’s available. You should be able to install Windows 10 via Windows Update, too, and the Windows Media Creation Tool should be updated in short order to create update install DVDs and USB drives.
Windows 10 is a pretty big deal. It’s correcting a lot of the problems that Microsoft created in Windows 8 — like bringing back a proper Start Menu and allowing Metro and desktop apps to run side by side on your desktop. There’s an all-new web browser, Edge, that levels the playing field with the likes of Chrome and Firefox. Cortana will also make her desktop debut in Windows 10, Xbox Live integration is getting properly done up, peer-to-peer updates are being introduced, and Microsoft’s calling it their most secure OS ever.
Microsoft really wants to make sure people upgrade to their latest OS. They’re so bullish on Windows 10 that there was even talk that they would give it to people who were running pirated copies of Windows for free. While that’s partly true — pirates will be able to upgrade their OS to Windows 10 — Microsoft isn’t just letting them off the hook. They’ll still need to purchase a product key if they want to get Genuine and avoid using a crippled OS.
